Naughty For Nice

The sunrise woke me before the bell and that is normally a good sign for the day. I cannot explain it but there is something very special about waking up to the warm sun on your face. I was first to the bath again and that also makes for a good day. Therefore you can understand my feelings of betrayal when I arrived downstairs for breakfast to find Remington.

Mr. Carrington was talking quietly with him near the table and they both looked at me when I entered the room. Between their two expressions I felt certain rain clouds had just moved in over my head. Despite a sudden desire to go back to bed and wait for tomorrow I continued toward them with a polite smile gracing my lips.

“Good morning.” I said.

They replied in kind.

“Might I have a word?” Mr. Carrington asked gesturing down the hall toward his study.

“Certainly.” I said feeling as though my entire body was trembling in nervous anticipation.

The serious look on his face told me I was not going to like this talk.

Behind closed doors, he offered me a chair. I sat, relieved to not be bending over it. He looked nervous now that we were alone. His hand shook slightly as he reached into his jacket and retrieved a letter. He handed it to me.

“Here. Read this, I think it will explain better than I can.”

Dear Mr. A. Carrington,

I have received this morning some very disturbing news. I have it on good authority, my daughter recently participated in a meeting of the school board. I find it disturbing I was not notified in advance of such an occurrence however I find the subject matter of even greater disturbance.

It is clear from my daughter’s words to the school board she has fallen under sour influences while in your care. Be it known I intend a formal complaint over these matters. How the school board could allow my daughter or any woman to testify before it on matters as political as the joining of male students in the woman’s college is beyond my comprehension. Furthermore, where such a student is called upon to make statements it would be only proper that her guardian be informed well in advance.

Had I the opportunity to discuss my daughter’s testimony in advance of the occasion I have no doubt she would have avoided bringing shame to our family name. It is regrettable you had not the foresight to intervene.

Rest assured I do not hold Penelope fully responsible for her actions. She is a bright young lady but in the matters of politics such as these it is expected her opinions be questionable and unfounded in logic. Still I see no alternative but to insist she receive proper chastisement for her ridiculous and shameful antics at the aforementioned meeting of the board.

Ordinarily, I would ask any such chastisement be delivered from you but in this case I believe it unfair to Penelope as clearly you are more guilty than she. I ask you inform Penelope of my request, and allow the young man, Mr. R. Drake, to carry out my wishes.

As for yourself, I expect a formal apology to myself and my daughter to be recorded on the minutes of the next meeting of the school board. I also, demand it be noted that neither myself, nor my daughter advocate any radical changes in the operations of Brown University or Primrose College.

Sincerely,
Radcliffe Sumter

I read the letter three times. I thought perhaps it might magically change before my eyes. No such luck. Mr. Carrington remained silent and patiently waited for me to digest the bad news.

“I don’t understand.” I said to him.

“Mr. Drake is here, at you r father’s request, to punish you for your statements before the school board.”

“No. I don’t understand how he could know.”

“Your father has connections throughout the University. Undoubtedly one of them informed him.”

I nodded still reeling from the shock. Being punished for speaking my mind was bad enough but from a man I despise is near intolerable. I contemplated refusing to accept it until hearing from my father directly but discarded it as a bad idea. My father would not take kindly to further disruption on a matter he considers resolved.

“I know I should not contradict your father, but I must express my approval for the manner in which you handled yourself at the very meeting he condemns. You did yourself and Primrose College proud.” Mr. Carrington said.

I gave a half-hearted smile to him in response. No amount of exaltation will change the hard reality of my father’s wishes and my impeding doom at the hands of none other than Remington.
A quiet knock on the door brought that doom a step closer.

Mr. Carrington opened the door with a sympathetic look on his face. I was not surprised to see Remington waiting on the other side of the door. He was not grinning but he still managed to look intolerably smug.

No doubt I will have to redouble my efforts to entrap him in some mischief as I have already succeeded with Lucy and Jenny. He, more than they, was complicit in my public whipping and shame. He no doubt was somehow complicit in my father’s knowledge of the meeting and he had better watch his back after this incident for I swear before God I will not rest a single night until he suffers a worse humiliation than I.

Remington and Mr. Carrington exchanged quiet words to which I paid no attention. After a moment, Mr. Carrington stepped out and Remington stepped in. He closed the door behind himself before turning his attention to me.

“It is agreeable to see you again, Penelope. I regret the circumstances are not better.” He said.

“We are alone you can save your flattery.”

“Whether you approve or not I will not set aside my manners. It is clear as your father states, you have been corrupted here.”

“If speaking my mind is corruption than it is true and I am unapologetic for it.”

“You do not speak your mind but your heart.”

“Do not presume to know my mind or my heart.”

“I know you better than you think.”

“If you imply my thinking is flawed more than your knowledge of me then you are arrogance incarnate.”

“We could go round and round the whole day, your whit is sharp, your tongue sharper and believe it or not I respect you for it.”

“I choose not, for respect is not reflected in your manner or actions.”

“So be it. I have time enough to change your mind and change it you will.”

“Unless you plan to lobotomize me, my mind is set and will not change so far as you are concerned.”

“Stubborn and willful, prideful too. You are much like your father only lacking his wisdom.”
“I am my father’s daughter and you would do well to remember it.”

“Your threat is empty. Your father stands with me not with you and you would do well to remember that.”

“Were my father present I would expose you as the fraud you are.”

“You would expose yourself as well then? I think not. You are as trapped in this charade as I and do not forget it is of your own making.”

“You have taken advantage.”

“Yes, that is why men are men and women are women.”

“I tire of your company, let us get this over with.”

“If you insist. Strip.” He ordered.

I stared disbelievingly at him. He could not possibly expect I would removed my clothing in his company.

“Are you hard of hearing? I said strip!” He moved closer to me as he spoke.

“No.” I replied.

“Remove your clothes or I will rip them from your body.” He hissed.

I stared refusal into his eyes.

His hand reached out for me. I shrank back expecting to be slapped. Instead he grabbed hold of my hair and yanked me to feet. I felt helpless in his grasp. I wanted to run for the door but knew he would never allow me to reach it. His free hand began to fumble at my collar and the realization he would do what he said sank in.

“Wait!” I cried. “I’ll do it.”

His grip turned my head forcibly to meet his gaze. I surrendered myself to him and he nodded acceptance. His hand released me.

“Strip.” He ordered for the last time.

I did so with tears welling in my eyes. Every button undone brought them closer to falling but I somehow kept them contained. As I bared my flesh I could feel his hungry gaze sweeping over me, taking in every curve, every fold of soft secret flesh. I could not bare to meet his eyes.

Naked I stood with my clothing piled at my feet. I looked down at my bare feet in hopes of escaping the humiliation of acknowledging his presence but instead the view of my naked bosom, legs and toes only accentuated the shame of standing before him. My nipples hardened in humiliation and my face flushed hot with shame.

“So you can do as your told.” He taunted.

“Yes.” I whispered.

“Look at me.” He commanded.

I struggled to meet his gaze and in the end settled for staring at his nose. Tears stung at the corners of my eyes.

“You will address me with respect. Understood?”

“Yes.” I replied.

“Yes, what?” he asked.

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine.

“Yes, sir.” I said.

“Better. Fold your things neatly in a stack.” He directed.

“Yes, sir.” I replied.

The “sir” stuck in my throat and burned like fire. I focused on the task at hand promising myself again I would have the last laugh at his expense. Small comfort in the moment but it was enough to carry me forward. I swallowed my tears and played my submissive part. I folded my clothing slowly, meticulously. Remington waited patiently, enjoying his view.

My task complete I stood facing him yet again. My hands crossed in front of me in a futile attempt to provide a small amount of modesty. Remington would have none of it though.

“Hands at your sides. Modesty is for ladies not naughty little girls who need their bare bottoms smacked.”

I surrendered what little modesty I had and dropped my arms to my sides. I felt colder despite the burning humiliation reddening my skin. Remington enjoyed a self-satisfied moment of smugness and then knelt to lift my folded pile of clothing in his hands.

I longed for him to stop with the theatrics and get to the spanking. No doubt I would wish I had not rushed into the moment later but the humiliation of baring myself to him was eating away at my resolve to accept the inevitable.

He walked to the door and opened it. I gasped in surprise. My lip began to quiver as I guessed his next instruction.

‘Lead me to your room.” He said gesturing me out into the hallway like the gentleman he is not.

I could not completely contain the tremors in my legs as I walked. In the hallway I squeezed my eyes shut fighting back the threatening tears. I walked slowly but purposefully toward the dining hall. Were there another way around I would have taken it in a second but there was not and Remington knew it all too well.

There were gasps as I first entered the dining hall. The tables were full with the girls enjoying breakfast. A couple more steps into the room and the gasps became giggles. I reminded myself to keep my arms at my sides despite the overwhelming temptation to attempt to shield myself from their gazes. My face burned hotter than even moments ago when I thought I could bare no more embarrassment.

I exited the room with tears on my cheeks. The giggles of my peers stung worse than any birch ever could. I climbed the stairs with Remington directly behind me. I prayed for the stairs to collapse under my feet but God was too amused by my shame just like Remington.

I opened the door into my shared room and stepped inside. It took every ounce of self-control not to slam the door closed in Remington’s face. He offered my stack of clothing to me.

“Put them away properly now. You will not need them again today.” He said.

More tears spilled from my eyes, but I did as I was told with a mumbled, “Yes, sir.”

“Come now, I think there is still enough time for you to have a small breakfast.” He said.

“Yes, sir.” I replied and followed him back down the stairs to my giggling peers in the dining hall.

I wanted to question just what exactly my punishment would be but I feared I all ready knew.

I ate a small bowl of cereal under his watchful eyes. I was far from hungry but his body language made it clear not eating was not an option he would allow. When I finished most of the other girls had already left the table and were on their way out the door for morning classes. I briefly entertained the thought I might miss mine for the day.

“We should set off to Primrose Hall now. You have class in a half hour.” He said.

“You cannot expect me to attend like this?” I asked in disbelief despite all ready knowing the answer.

“I do not, but your father does. You have embarrassed him and it is fitting your punishment shall embarrass you.” He replied.

As we stepped out into the street I recalled the kindness of Jonathon who had spared me this humiliation once before. Remington is no Jonathon and there was no one else to save me this time. My shame grew yet again beyond all limits.

The ground was hot underneath my feet and I found myself walking hurriedly on tiptoes. Remington was clearly captivated by the bounce in my bosom as were many of the males we passed on the street. Eternity in hell passed and we climbed the steps of Primrose Hall.

We entered Mr. Bard’s classroom. He looked surprised at my state but said nothing as Remington signaled him for a word. A few moments later and I was seated on the dunce stool, hat on my head facing the class.

Halfway through the class, Mr. Bard paused to introduce Remington. Remington stepped forward from his place standing at the back of the classroom. He removed the dunce cap from my head.

“Stand up.” He ordered while removing a leather strap from his jacket.

I stared at the strap, eyes wide open.

“Touch your toes and count these.” He ordered.

“Yes, sir.” I replied and complied.

It was almost a relief to at last be awaiting the pain of punishment. I have always known that the humiliation is a heavier weight than the physical punishment on my flesh but until that moment I had never realized how the physical helped carry me through the emotional pain of embarrassment and shame.

He slapped the strap down with a snap against my bulging buttocks. I winced at the surprising sting.

“One.” I said.

“One, what?”

“One, sir.” I said with a small sigh.

“Right we will start over now.” He said and swung the strap again.

I cried out unprepared for the harsher stroke biting my flesh.

“One, sir.”

The next fell without hesitation. I cried out again at the stinging bite.

“Two, sir.”

Snap!

“Three, sir.”

Snap!

“OW!” I screamed as it bit into my thigh.

My classmates laughed at my pain.

“Four, sir.” I finally managed.

Snap!

“OW! OW!” I screamed as he struck the very same tender flesh of my thigh.

“Five, sir.”

Snap!

I began to sob as the burn in my buttocks became overwhelming. All I could think about was massaging my tender flesh to ease the pain away.

“Six, sir.”

Snap!

I cried even harder. My butt felt like a dozen bees had graced it with their stingers.

“OW! Please, no more.” I said between sobs.

There was no reply.

“Seven, sir.” I counted.

Snap!

“OWWWWIE!” I screamed.

The tip of the leather wrapped around my thigh striking the tender flesh between my legs. I jumped upright, grabbing at the spot and bouncing up and down in a circle.

The classroom roared with laughter. I cared not.

“Stop this pathetic display at once!” Remington barked.

Somewhere deep inside I found the strength to obey.

“Eight sir.” I whined.

He nodded approval and despite my hatred of him I was grateful for it.

“Sit back down on the stool.” He ordered.

I hesitantly did as instructed. The hardwood of the stool was additional torture to my flaming cheeks. I continued to cry without shame. He placed the cap back on my head and returned to his standing place at the back of the room. Mr. Bard finished his lesson.

When the entire class had exited, Remington came forward again and allowed me to stand once more. He thanked Mr. Bard for his assistance and escorted me out.

Attending Dr. Phallic’s class was much the same routine. I sat on the dunce stool facing the class until mid-way through. Only Remington borrowed Dr. Phallic’s paddle instead of using his strap.
I touched my toes, trembling before the class. The first swat of the paddle re-ignited the slowly dimming fire in my behind.

“One, sir.” I counted obediently.

Crack!

“Two, sir.”

Crack!

“OW!” I cried.

I nearly grabbed my butt in response to the new burning across both my cheeks.

“Three, sir.”

Crack!

I cried harder, but managed to keep in position.

“Four, sir.”

Crack!

I began to sob again.

“Five, sir.”

Crack!

“Please no more!” I screamed.

The class laughed at my pleading but Remington remained silent.

“Six, sir.”

Crack!

Tears dripped down to my toes.

“Seven, sir.”

Crack!

I nearly leapt in the air again at the low swat on my thighs. The memory of my peers hysterical laughter kept me down.

“Eight, sir.”

It was over then. I sat back on the stool unable to comfort my tortured buttocks. I cried while facing my classmates. They smirked gleefully as though they knew I deserved every swat.

Tears still adorned my cheeks as we exited Primrose Hall for the day. Remington paused on the way down the steps, grabbing my arm so I was forced to turn and face him.

“Are you ashamed?” He asked.

“Yes, sir.”

“Good.” He smiled and continued walking then.

We walked in silence until we reached the steps of Carrington Manor. Remington slowed me to a stop and forced me again to face him.

“You know of course, your punishment is not over.” He said.

I had surmised as much but hoped I was wrong. I nodded my head not trusting my tongue to speak without landing me in more trouble.

We continued up the steps and went inside. I wondered what more could possibly be in store for me. I wondered if my words had really been so bad as to deserve all of this.

Mrs. Carrington’s dunce stool awaited me in the main hall along with the hat. I took my seat of shame without comment.

“She is to remain there until bedtime.” He said to Mrs. Carrington.

She nodded.

“No dinner for her and she is to return to this very spot first thing in the morning, still nude. I will retrieve her in time to escort her to class tomorrow.” He continued.

“I will see that she follows your instructions.” Mrs. Carrington replied.

Pins And A Paddle

May 20, 1896
Margaret Spooner

“Miss Spooner.” Mrs. Carrington called.

“Yes, ma’am?” I replied inquisitively.

I had only just finished breakfast and was about to head upstairs to gather my books for classes. I racked my brain for what misstep I had possibly made and came up empty.

“Might I have a word in my den?” She asked politely.

Of course it was not as if I could say no and expect it to be left at that.

“Yes, ma’am.”

My peers wore amused looks, no doubt expecting my immediate future would involve some motherly chastisement. Were I only in their shoes I would have done the same.

Mrs. Carrington closed the door.

Standing silent in front of her desk, I waited to be told off. I was even prepared to pay attention, although only because I wanted to know what it was I had done this time. I silently reviewed all the things I thought I had gotten away with in recent weeks and wondered which of them she had discovered. Perhaps my tattling on Lucy has had unforeseen consequences?

Mrs. Carrington was in no hurry to alleviate my worry. There was a package on her desk, wrapped in brown paper. She carefully cut the ties and set about neatly unwrapping the thin but long, rectangular box. She pulled a small note from it and read it silently. By the expression on her face she was amused by its script.

The silence and long wait began to eat away at my patience. Not that I have a tremendous amount of it to begin with. The uncertainty was the real problem. If I knew why I was called before her, it would be much easier to stand in silence waiting. Obviously then, I would know what to kick myself about. I could accept the inevitable punishment as just, but to simply stand waiting for punishment with no knowledge of the offense is nearly unbearable.

Mrs. Carrington lifted the lid of the box in such a way as to shield the contents from my view. Perhaps it is a sixth sense I have, but I had the distinct impression I preferred the contents to remain anonymous. Mrs. Carrington dropped the lid back down keeping the contents hidden but not closing the box either. She looked up at me, a foreboding twinkle in her eyes.

I shifted uncomfortably where I stood. I felt nervous and naughty and still I had no idea why I was present. My tongue ached to ask the simple question and yet I knew it was best to remain silent and wait for her to state it. She seemed amused by my discomfort.

“Dr. Phallic and I had the opportunity to discuss you over the weekend.” Mrs. Carrington began. “Thus far this year your behavior in his class has be inexcusably disrespectful.”

“I would not categorize that as a fair statement. I have the utmost respect for Dr. Phallic.” I replied.

My nervous voice carried an annoying whine in its tone and I do not think it was only me it annoyed. Mrs. Carrington gave me a look which managed to communicate disbelief and mild annoyance all at once.

“This is not a forum for debate of the facts, Miss Spooner. Your actions and words in class have proven you lack of respect regardless of your claimed intentions to the contrary.” Mrs. Carrington said.

“Sorry, ma’am. Yes, ma’am.” I replied.

No point in saying anything I do not have to at this point. It is clear the more words I use to defend myself the deeper I will sink into the trouble about to befall me. I wonder how many of my peers are capable of following this simple wisdom?

“As I am certain you recall, you have been punished repeatedly for this disgraceful behavior throughout the last year.” Mrs. Carrington continued.

I nodded.

“Rather than deterring you it seems to have spurred you onward. In recent months your behavior in Dr. Phallic’s class has gone from mild mischief to downright disobedience and disrespect.” Mrs. Carrington continued.

I bit my tongue to keep from arguing.

“After lengthy discussion, we have concluded more serious measures are required.”

“Which is why I am here.” I said allowed although I had not meant to be heard.

“Precisely.” Mrs. Carrington replied.

I swallowed contemplating my immediate future. I guessed the contents of the box on her desk to be an integral part of the ‘more serious measures.’ Mrs. Carrington picked up a small box of pins and walked around her desk to the stand on the same side of it as I.

“Lean over the desk and lift the back of your skirt.” She ordered.

I hesitated for a moment. Random bits of knowledge articulated themselves into my conscious thoughts and established a temporary but paralyzing fear. It was the pins in her hand to blame. A few months ago I read an article at length which described an ancient technique known as acupuncture. The procedure is such that pins are inserted into the skin at specific locations so as to directly influence the victims nervous system. Manipulation of the nerves is then possible and depending on the intentions the victim can be made to feel everything from intoxicating pleasure to intense pain.

“Now, Miss Spooner.” She ordered interrupting my thoughts.

I leaned forward on her desk and reached back, gathering my skirt up and pulling it up above my buttocks. I reassured myself my fears were unwarranted as it is doubtful Mrs. Carrington is an expert at acupuncture. In fact, it is doubtful she has even heard of it.

She soon relieved my fears by proceeding to pin my skirt to the back of my blouse. I was tempted to ask if it would not be easier for me to simply remove it but in further analysis deemed her motivations to be in opposition of ‘easier.’

I had plenty of time to consider the contents of the box in front of my face. Judging by the relative size of the box, it’s shallow depth and lack of padding I concluded the contents were likely either something made of wood or leather. Given Dr. Phallic’s propensity for wood, I bet on the contents being a paddle of similar design to the one hanging in his classroom.

Mrs. Carrington finished her task of pinning up the back of my skirt and then set about removing my bloomers. I realize the matter was far from humorous but I was unable to contain a few giggles do to my embarrassingly ticklish nature. I was helpful in lifting my feet as required for the complete removal.

Mrs. Carrington seemed relatively content and happy with her work thus far. I read that as a positive sign for me. A happy Mrs. Carrington is a less fearsome disciplinarian. When her mood is such I do try my best not to spoil it. Two years in Carrington Manor has taught me that much.

“Go ahead, open the box.” Mrs. Carrington said interrupting my thoughts yet again.

“Yes, ma’am.” I replied.

I carefully lifted the lid and set it to the side. Inside the box lay an oak paddle with six holes drilled through it in two parallel columns or three parallel rows, depending upon your perspective. I tend to think of it as two columns but I suppose that makes little difference in influencing the opinions of others. Obviously I was not surprised by the contents.

“Lift it out and hand it to me.” She said.

For such a thick and large implement it is surprisingly light weight. Its impact is anything but light weight and thus it is easy to comprehend Dr. Phallic’s obsession with the implement. It certainly is far easier to use and more precise than say a birch rod and yet it remain relatively easy to swing without significant effort or force. Add to that its lifespan which is much longer than the birch rod’s typical one to two punishment’s span and you have to admit it is a logical alternative.

The main drawback for the paddle is the limitation on effective swats. A birch rod can be used until it disintegrates and then another fetched and the punishment continued until the disciplinarian is too exhausted to continue (I shudder to think of the poor victim in such a case!). The paddle on the other hand has a finite usage before it either begins to cause to severe of damage or the victim is totally desensitized and oblivious to further efforts.

Personally I think anything beyond thirty or so punishing strokes with any implement is ineffective. Not for the obvious reason of desensitization but because the attention span of the punished will likely fail after a longer punishment leaving the victim confused about the original purpose of the discipline being applied. If one can no longer remember why their buttocks are smarting it is likely that regardless of intentions to avoid further chastisement they commit similar offenses in the future because the necessary connection between cause and effect will have been disrupted.

“Any day, Margaret.” Mrs. Carrington’s impatient voice interrupted my thoughts yet again.

So as to avoid pushing my luck I handed the polished wooden implement to her. She lifted from my hands clearly expecting a greater weight from it. I smiled despite knowing its imminent effect on my posterior.

She waved it through the air experimentally a few times, causing a light breeze. It felt nice in the heat of spring. I was tempted to request she continue so as to fan me a few degrees cooler. Yes, I thought better of it before the words left my mouth.

Mrs. Carrington took careful aim on my bare backside. She slowly raised the paddle up in the air and then just as slowly brought it back down to tap my buttocks.

“One, ma’am” I said unable to resist an attempt at levity.

Mrs. Carrington chuckled.

“I hope the laugh was worth it. You have just earned one more than you would have gotten.” She said.

I sighed. I should have figured as much. Oh well.

The next time the paddle touched my overly plump buttocks it had a lot more momentum.

“One, ma’am.” I said.

She took her time and allowed the swat to tingle its way up from a light sting to a simmering heat. Then she swung again.

“Two, ma’am.”

Smack! Smack!

“Three, ma’am.. Four, ma’am.”

The simmering heat was becoming a full blaze. I shifted my feet from side to side a little to help moderate the pain.

Smack! Smack! Smack!

“Five, ma’am. Six, ma’am. Seven, ma’am.”

Stray tears stung at my eyes. I wiped them away on my sleeve. My feet stamped involuntarily from side to side. It was no longer helping but I my reflexes demanded the action anyway. If I thought she would listen, I would have begged for mercy.

Smack! Smack!

“Eight, ma’am. Nine, ma’am.”

More tears spilled out from my eyes and I found myself sniffling. My legs continued to kick in response to the biting warmth elicited in my posterior region.

Smack!

“Ten, ma’am.” I said in a whiny voice that even surprised me.

I watched a tear drop fall on the desktop. The act seemed significant in some way, like a damn bursting with only a single drop of water. Sure enough a flood of tears followed and in them I claimed absolution for sins as yet undiscovered. I have often found it comforting to look at an undeserved punishment in this light. There is always something hanging over the past for which I have not been punished but no doubt should have been.

“If you had kept your mouth shut that would have been all, but since that was too difficult…” She trailed off.

Smack!

“Eleven, ma’am.” I said through sniffles.

“Stand up.” She ordered.

I stood and faced her, tears still falling at an embarrassing rate.

“Now I believe you have class with Dr. Phallic in about an hour?”

It was not really a question but I felt compelled to answer it anyway.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Then you had best hurry along.” She said.

“Will you help me with these pins?” I asked trying to reach back.

“No, leave them alone. Your skirt stays up until tonight.”

Understanding finally dawned on me. I felt a bit silly and a lot stupid for not realizing sooner.

It was quite the embarrassing journey to Primrose Hall. I am certain a hundred pairs of eyes stared at my glowing cheeks on my way. Some made themselves more well known than others with finger pointing and uncontrolled laughter.

Lucy Meyer in particular felt a need to point out my embarrassment to me.

“Do you know your skirt is pinned to your blouse?” She asked.

“Is it?” I responded.

“You also seem to have forgotten your bloomers!” She laughed.

“I did no such thing. It is far to warm for bloomers.” I replied.

Fortunately, she elected to give up on teasing me. I am not a good sport about it and she would soon find it out had she continued.

Dr. Phallic was pleased to see me. I was less pleased for him to see me, especially my buttocks which were of particular interest to him. He had me bend over a student desk so he could study the markings from the paddle and the relative redness of my cheeks. I wonder if the was taking lab notes on his observations. No doubt they would be useful for future comparisons.

He was extra nice after his inspection and granted me a seat at the front of the class. The stool was acceptably uncomfortable and the fashionable cap on my head made me feel a bit like a princess. Now if only Prince Charming would make an appearance…

Maid To Be Naked

March 19, 1896
Sarah Waters

I wonder how Jasper does it, sleep I mean. Horses do it all the time, on their feet, but with people we tend to lay down to sleep. I remember my grandmother could do it sitting down but what does it take to sleep when on one’s feet?

Billy left me tied to the post the night he whipped me. My legs had given out and it was only the rope binding my arms which kept me vertical. The weight of my body on my bound arms felt as though they should have ripped clean off. I did not have the will to ease the pain and so I rested against it, buried my heart in it.

It was a more peaceful place than the one my mind tried to travel. Laura crying in pain, huddled in a dark corner with a few kind hands trying to provide comfort. There was none they could really give her and there was nothing to be said. It was all my fault, she would live with the scar on her face but I could feel the same scar burning my soul for all eternity.

Perhaps in time she will forgive me, I never intended for harm to come to her. I was wrong to put her at risk but I saw no other choice. Now, when looking back, I see there was another choice. It was a choice I did not want to accept and that is why I did not acknowledge it. Will God forgive me my blindness? Perhaps the better question is should he?

A good first step in seeking forgiveness is to ask for it. Why is then I find myself unable to ask Laura for it? I suppose our friendship has ended but I think it really ended that afternoon we delivered laundry to Billy Buster and his gang. I certainly did not realize it at the time but in that single afternoon we drifted into different worlds, irreconcilable worlds.

It is funny to think now on the lesson my mother has been striving to me of late. I missed it entirely until I spent that sleepless night tied to the post. Sometimes it is not enough to be right. This is one of those times but I do not believe I should simply give up either. There is hope in darkness, else we would never know the light from the dark.

So, knowing now that being right is not enough, knowing that might can make right from wrong, what does it take to make right from right without might? If you can answer that you are smarter than I. For the moment I must accept the inevitable.

For a change, Billy was right. The day after my escape attempt he cut me down and I collapsed at his feet. He picked me up carefully almost as though I was a prized doll and held me close to his heart. He took me away from the barn and into the house where he and his men were living. Gently he laid me down on his bed.

I feared the worst but had no strength to fend him off. I accepted defeat and the humiliation it would bring but he did not take advantage. Instead he rolled me to my stomach and began cleansing the wounds on my back left by his whip. His kindness evoked more tears than his whip ever could. I wanted to flinch away from his touch but my body surrendered to it.

I relaxed in his care. My mind should have raged against him, fought him at every turn but I did not. I could blame it on exhaustion. I could say I had no choice. Truth be told, I craved the tenderness of his touch. I am ashamed.

When I awoke nearly a full day later, Billy was still at my bedside. I felt sheepish to be waking in his bed. I blushed furiously, realizing I was naked as well. Billy wore a wide grin. I suppose I should be flattered.

“Where are my clothes?” I asked.

“Gone.” He replied.

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the truth. I burned them.”

I felt fear creeping back.

“Why am I here?” I asked.

“Cause your not safe with the others no more.”

“And I’m safe with you?”

Billy laughed as I gestured at my nakedness.

“Safe enough. If your father’s as smart as they say, you’ll be going home soon enough.”

“My father would likely kill you if he saw me like this.”

“Well then, we’ll just have to make sure he don’t.”

“May I have some clothes?”

“No.”

I felt panic in my throat. What does he intend to do with me, to me?
Billy stood up grabbed hold of my arm and pulled me up off his bed. I decided not to protest despite my rising embarrassment.

“You’re going to earn your keep.” He said.

“I didn’t ask to stay here.” I replied.

“Makes no difference to me. You’ll earn your keep or you’ll be whipped and still do it anyway. The choice is yours.”

“What do you expect me to do?” I asked hoping I would not regret it.

“My men need a decent cook. I assume you know how?”

I considered saying no but I doubt he would believe me.

“Yes.” I replied with a hint of irritation.

He slapped my face. I stared at him in surprise.

“Watch the tone, little lady.”

I nodded my understanding.

“So, you’ll cook for them and serve them.” He said.

“I will do it gladly, if you allow me to dress.” I negotiated.

Billy slapped me again. I tasted blood in my mouth as I inadvertently bit my cheek.

“You’ll do it gladly and you’ll do it stark naked.” He commanded.

I nodded.

“Say it.” He ordered.

“I’ll do it gladly.” I said with my head down in shame.

“Say all of it.” He ordered with a smirk on his face.

“I’ll do it gladly and naked.” I said, the bitter taste of defeat in my mouth.

“You’re learning.” He said in self-satisfaction.

He reached out and stroked my breasts with his hands as though I were a pet for his pleasure. I shuddered under his touch. Tears stung at my eyes but I bit my cheek harder and forced them back. I stared straight into his eyes and dared him to do more.

He gave a final squeeze to my right breast and then patted my butt with his rough hand.

“Come now, little lady. The kitchen awaits.” He said.

I walked out of the room in front of him, my legs trembling. Six steps later and I stood in a room full of his men. They stared unabashedly. They whistled their pleasure. I turned to ice and continued on my way to the kitchen. Fleetingly I wondered if matters could get worse.

Wives Are Not Friends

May 17, 1896
Charles Birchwood

I remember Caroline. The way she smiled when I walked through her door, the flutter of her eyelashes across a crowded room, and the way she smelled nervously holding my hand. I would always be nervous too. I always feared I would say something wrong, something innocent and insulting in the same breath. Undoubtedly, I did and not once but many times. Caroline would forgive me for a passionate kiss. In those days, actions spoke louder than words. Yes, I remember Caroline and I miss her.

No, my wife has not left me again. The Caroline I recall was my friend, she was young and beautiful and full of spirit. The one who graces the living room corner is my wife. She inhabits the same body, albeit older but just as beautiful if not more so and let us not forget that spirit which has not weakened over time but grown stronger. Still it became clear to me today she is no longer the friend I recall.

I had thought since Caroline has been behaving better through this week, I would reward her with a nice afternoon on the town. She has always loved the act of shopping and truth be told I thought it would be best if she had a new dress to wear when we meet my new employer next month.

First impressions are so important and Caroline is capable of making them go either way. I am not above bribery to achieve my goals, although were Caroline to think for a moment she would certainly realize that opposing my goals at such a meeting would be as disastrous for her as it is for me. Unfortunately, it is easier to buy a new a dress than to get my wife to think in the logical terms of cause and effect. I wonder if this is true of all wives or am I the only man blessed with a purely emotional creature?

We were walking pleasantly on Main Street when the first sign of trouble should have been heeded. The afternoon warmth on my back was relaxation incarnate. The walk along the shops was delightfully slow and I was reminded of my youth and the carefree days of summer. I suppose it was the memory to blame, and I grasped Caroline’s hand in my own. It seemed such a good idea at the moment, natural as though all the hard years of marriage had never been. She pulled away, not immediately, but too soon and too deliberately to have been anything but a rebuke. I was too agreeable as usual and let it pass without mention.

A few steps away, Caroline’s eye was caught by a window display. She stood marveling before it as though the dress would magically transport itself from inside the store to her person. It took less than a minute for the salesman inside to recognize prey. He opened the door and smiled at her. She returned the smile with a slight blush and by the look in his eyes he knew he had her trapped.
I sighed and followed them inside. The door nearly hitting me as clearly I was the less important of the two of us.

“Oh, do forgive me sir. I thought this beautiful creature was alone.”

What he really meant was he thought she had the purse strings and I was not relevant. Perhaps this is because he has sold her many items in the past when I must ashamedly admit she did have the purse strings.

“Quite all right fellow. I will only deduct 10% from the sale this time.” I smiled pleasantly to ease the sting.

His face whitened a touch but he skillfully maintained a smile.

“Oh, Charles! Don’t be a miser.” Caroline chastised me.

I should have nipped the situation right then. I should have turned her over my knee and spanked the attitude right out of her. I should have rescinded my generous offer to reward her good behavior. Instead I stood mouth agape for a moment and then settled into a waiting chair.

“Get yourself fitted dear.” I said resigned to a long wait and too high a bill.

The salesman went about his business. Caroline flirted shamelessly with him all the while. His hands took liberties which no man should take from another man’s wife. I seethed quietly in my chair. Caroline flashed me smiles and winks, not directed at me but clearly for me. She wanted my rage, I am certain of it. The salesman would glance at me as well from time to time but his looks were of disgruntlement. No doubt he would have liked me to leave.

At long last, Caroline was clad in the new dress. She modeled it proudly in front of the mirrors. I stepped forward to have a look. Should I have acted as though it was beautiful just for the fact she was wearing it? I think not.

“No, Caroline. That will not do at all.” I said.

I need not have bothered for the salesman’s face said all that needed to be said. I am not a man of fashion but I do know how to play cards and the young salesman could not win with a royal flush.
Caroline however was not as observant or was she testing me?

“But, Charles, it is the one I like.”

“It does not flatter you.” I replied.

I turned to the salesman who clearly found our argument amusing.

“Tell her the truth.” I said to him.

“You are beautiful.” He said without hesitation.

He smiled as crooked as his words.

“She is indeed but the dress is not.” I replied.

He chose silence.

“You just don’t love me.” Caroline complained.

Do such comments deserve a response? A husband should not have to re-affirm his love at every turn. The commitment of marriage itself seems affirmation of love enough but should that not be enough there is all the years of caring for her, tending to her needs. How after all these explicit signs would she come to question my love?

I will tell you how. It is because I have not been firm enough. I have not chastised her when she richly needed it, because I treated her as a dear friend and not a wife. I dared to care of her feelings, illogical and irrational as they may be. No more will I be a good friend.

I slapped her face, not hard but enough to let her know I would tolerate no more disobedience.

“Remove that disgusting garment this instant.” I said in firmness.

Caroline stood still in shock for a moment before complying. The young salesman looked at me as though I might slap him next and were he to lay another finger on my wife I might well have. He smartly stayed back and out of the way. And to think they say the youth are dumb.

Clearly Caroline believed I was set on chastising her in this public setting. She stood still with tears welling up once the dress was removed. Part of me was satisfied to see her waiting for instructions and assuming nothing was beyond my intentions. I would have disciplined her on the spot but for my dislike of the salesman. His hands had already explored more of Caroline than I approved. I would not give his eyes the same pleasure.

“Get dressed.” I ordered with enough impatience in my tone to make it clear I would not be appreciative of dawdling.

She wasted no time. Her face spoke volumes of relief. Outside the shop, I offered her my arm. She hesitated for a moment and then took it as a good wife should. I led us home, my head high while hers was low. I think she knew the incident was far from forgotten despite my gentleness.

“Fetch me your hairbrush.” I ordered as we entered my home.

“What for?” She asked, a quizzical look on her face.

I did not answer. I looked harshly on her and she ran up the stairs without a further word. I removed my coat and tossed it over the arm of the sofa. I unbuttoned my sleeves and rolled them to my elbows. I tapped my foot on the rug waiting for her return.

Caroline came down the stairs timidly. Her head was down, looking at the hairbrush in her hand. It was silver and sparkling. She pursed her lips as she came to a stop before me. Her hand offered the brush to me. I took it.

“Fetch a chair from the dining table.” I ordered.

She glanced up at me for a moment, but wisely chose to say nothing. She nodded and left the room. A moment later she returned with an end chair from the table. Yes, the ones with arms on the side. She smiled a little as she sat it down in front of me. I smiled a little as well but I surmise for a different reason.

“Strip.” I said.

She complied meekly. Her rosy cheeks reminded me yet again of the Caroline of yesteryears. If only I could recapture the days of courtship I think I would be eternally happy. I longed for the rush of emotion from the first time I glimpsed her naked beauty.

She waited naked before me. There was something innocent in her stance which reminded me of a child awaiting a bath. It was fleeting and my heart hardened to the task at hand.

“Bend over and grab the arms of the chair.” I instructed.

Again she said nothing but complied. I unfastened my belt and drew it through the loops. I folded it in half and when her buttocks were bent and bulging out at me I lashed it down on them.

She cried out in shock. I whipped the belt downward again. She whimpered. I swung again and she hopped from foot to foot. Red marks appeared where the belt had kissed her. I could feel she was on the verge of tears and so I whipped my belt through the air faster. She cried out as it touched once more. She burst into tears as it touched again.

“Stand up.” I said.

She stood and faced me. Her hands reached back and massaged her bottom. Tears fell freely from her eyes.

“Take this chair back and bring me the right one, unless you want more of my belt.”

She turned quietly and lifted the chair.

It was not long and she returned with the correct dining chair, one without arms. I sat in it and she laid herself over my lap with only a minor amount of prompting. I took up her hairbrush and laid it softly on her fleshy posterior.

“Please, Charles. I’m sorry.” She said through tears.

“I know you are. You need this and because I do love you, I will give it.” I replied.

I raised the brush in the air and slapped it down on her pink cheeks. I alternated from left to right, keeping my aim to the lower half of her buttocks. She kicked and squirmed as her cheeks grew pinker and pinker. I kept my pace quick and regular.

As her cheeks grew red I took my aim lower, to her thighs. She yelped at the first kisses to her thighs. I smiled, knowing I was making a good impression. Her cries became sobs and her thighs became as reddened as her buttocks.

“I’m sorry, I’m really, really, really, sorry.” She sobbed finally, exhausted and unable to kick or squirm anymore.

I believed her. I stopped my assault and brought the brush to rest on her glowing butt. She cried in relief. I let her sob it all out, there was no reason to rush.

When her tears subsided, I helped her to stand. She looked at me with friendly eyes. I responded in kind.

“Take this and hold it . Stand, facing that corner and don’t you dare even think of rubbing. Am I understood?”

She took the brush from my hands reluctantly and nodded. I stood up.

“I cannot hear you.” I said.

“Yes, Charles.” She replied and walked to the corner, her head down in shame.

Friends For The Making

May 16, 1896
Margaret Spooner

Guess what day it is? Go on guess. I bet you said Friday, right? Well that is only partly correct. Today is the meeting of the school board and if ever there was an event deserving of its own day, it is this one.

I will not bore you with the details of the morning or early afternoon. Let us face facts and except that nothing else of real consequence could occur on this day.

There have been plenty of board meetings before this and there will undoubtedly be plenty more after but the issues before the board today are of singular importance. It is a rare occurrence that in the face of an event such as this, one can recognize its longer term implications and significance in the history of not only our country but of the entire world.

Okay, maybe I am exaggerating a little bit. Okay a lot, but I have never before been a participant in one of these things. I am quite nervous and a little embarrassed to be present. Who am I to speak against a fellow Primrose Girl?

I should take some comfort in the fact I am not the only girl speaking today. Actually, I believe my statements will be far less important than those of the others speaking. If I slip out the side door, will anyone notice?

Too late to try it. Mrs. Carrington sat next to me and placed her hand in mine.

The meeting was called to order and the first order of business was called up. I ignored it as it had nothing to do with me, something about boys being allowed to attend core curriculum classes at Primrose College.

Now that I think about it, I believe that was the matter Miss Meyer was agitated about in the first place. How ironic it would be the first order of business before a disciplinary hearing involving her.

I wish I could have brought along my anatomy book. At least then I could study until I was forced to testify. From pure boredom I began to count the number of wooden boards in the floor between my feet and the feet of Dean Steadward. 47, I think.

“…Primrose College.” The Dean said, catching my ear.

Next to me on the bench a girl I recognize as one of my peers, stood. Dark hair, slender build, face like a school teacher and expressions to match, you would think I would know her name. You would be wrong but you would think it.

Maybe I should pay attention and see or rather hear what is going on.

“State your name for the record.” Dean Steadward instructed as the young woman stood at the podium.

“Edith Bowen.”

“Thank you, Miss Bowen. You have a statement prepared for the board?”

“Yes, sir.”

“You may begin when you are ready.”

“Thank you, sir. Members of the board, Dean Steadward, faculty, staff, students and alumni of Brown University, faculty, staff, and peers of Primrose College; Good afternoon.

When I first arrived at Primrose College nearly three years ago, it was a different place than it is today. In those early days there were not many women in attendance, most were like me, charity cases with few or no prospects beyond what was offered here. Classes were held in late afternoons and taught by the same instructors who taught the young men of Brown University.

Often, we would have to relocate to the library as the sun would set leaving us in darkness inside Primrose Hall. Dean Steadward, I am certain you recall, in those days you often sat in on our classes.”

The Dean nodded his head in acknowledgment of the truth of her words.

Edith continued her speech.

“Since those early days, Primrose College has grown. Today it employs a faculty and staff independent of Brown University. Classes are held from early morning to late afternoon and the hallways are crowded with young women from all over our great country.

Primrose College has gained a level of independence from Brown University, but no matter how independent it has grown, it still stands on the same land, within the same gates.

I will not endeavor to argue these two schools are equal, they are not, but inside these gates, these walls, there is one thing each student holds in common; We have come to this place of learning to better ourselves and through bettering ourselves we shall better the world we live in.

It stands to reason then if our goals are the same, we can be taught to reach them in the same way. The location of the classroom should not matter as much as the education bestowed upon the students within it. A teacher’s credentials do not change for the location of the wall on which they hang.

Today you have heard from three young men who sat uncomfortably through a class I shared. I will admit to being uncomfortable myself, even embarrassed to know they were present, but if I can overcome my discomfort, surely they can overcome their own.

I have no doubt that adding young men to our classes at Primrose will have difficulities, foreseen and unforseen. I believe those difficulties pale in comparission to the doorways that can be opened and the knowledge we all stand to gain. I implore this board to give change a chance and let us learn together and see where the path may lead.

Thank you for your time, kind sirs.”

Edith concluded her speech to a mild round of applause. Had she stirred me, I would have joined. I promise, but I was not stirred, more aptly I was bored. To be even more bold I feel she lacked focus and her point (assuming she had one) was lost in her meanderings.

As Edith took her seat again, she trembled. I could see the faint glean of perspiration on her skin. Her friends gave her smiles and nods of support and I gave one as well although were I her friend I might have asked if she was satisfied with her performance.

At long last, Lucy Meyer became the topic of discussion. I was called forward first. My legs trembled as I approached the podium and my throat suddenly dried.

“State your name.” Dean Steadward ordered.

“Margaret Spooner.”

“It says here,” The Dean spoke while looking a page, “you reported on Miss Meyer’s bragging in regards to deeds done by her to Miss Sumter. Is that correct?”

“Yes, sir.”

“What is your relationship with Miss Meyer?”

“We are both students at Primrose College. Our rooms are in the same wing of Carrington Manor. Beyond occasionally crossing paths due to those two matters, we have no relationship.”

“What is your relationship with Miss Sumter?”

“Quite the same as with Miss Meyer. I have seen her about but rarely have spoken with her.”

“Why on this occasion did Miss Meyer proceed to confess to you?”

“I believe to categorize her speech as confession would be inaccurate, sir. Miss Meyer was bragging.”

“Very well, why do you believe she bragged to you?”

“Because I was present.”

“Your mere presence was enough to inspire, Miss Meyer to bragging?”

“No, sir. My presence was mere even to her bragging. Miss Meyer’s bragging was brought about by the apparent success of her plan.”

“Thank you, Miss Spooner. You may reclaim your seat.”

Relieved I did as he suggested and sat. Dean Steadward called for Penelope Sumter next. I admit to a modest amount of curiosity in what she would say.

“State your name.” The Dean ordered her.

“Penelope Sumter.” She replied.

“You have a statement for the board on the matter of Miss Lucy Meyer?”

“Yes, sir.”

“You may begin.”

“Thank you sir.” She replied.

She looked back over her shoulder and her eyes seemed to settle on Lucy for a moment. She cleared her throat and returned her gaze to the board.

“Lucy Meyer is a friend. She has been my roommate, my confidant, for the better part of a year. No one was more disappointed than I to learn of her treacherous behavior. A Primrose Girl should know better, should be better.

But, in fairness to Lucy, we do not always live up to what we should be.

A few moments ago, you heard from another Primrose Girl on the matter of allowing young men to attend classes at Primrose College. Miss Bowen strongly supports this measure as a logical step into the future of education.

I realize these matters at first seem unrelated but in fact they are so tightly related one cannot be discussed without the other.

Lucy Meyer is afraid of that change. She shudders at the thought of young men sitting beside her in class. She cringes at the very thought of those same young men establishing an opinion of her based on what they witness inside the classroom. Miss Meyer feels her very reputation is at stake.

I do not share her view, but I understand it. I spoke out in favor of this change between the two great schools represented here today. I believe it is the right path at this time for our two school to traverse.

Change, however, is always met with resistance and fear from some. The unknown can be a frightening prospect and it is natural to cling to the familiar in the face of it.

Lucy Meyer is clinging to the familiar. She is lashing out at the unknown and those who would seemingly force it upon her when she is not yet ready. She is only guilty of fear.

Were this board to do my bidding, it would be to declare the measure to offer joint classes approved but in such away that only those students and teachers who wish to participate will participate. Let the Lucy Meyer’s of our schools have the time they need to adjust. Let them cling to the familiar a bit longer while we daring explorers discover whether such things are worth while.

In the matter of Lucy Meyer’s transgressions against me, I ask this board be forgiving as I am. Let this board be understanding of the fears that drove her actions. Let none of us forget, we have all taken steps down a wrong path.

Miss Lucy Meyer is a friend, a Primrose girl, and she made a mistake. No more mistakes need be made.”

Penelope looked back to the place where Lucy Meyer sat. Unsurprisingly, Lucy’s face was wet with tears. I sensed a bit of shock in the Carrington’s beside me.

Penelope turned back to the board.

“Thank you for your consideration of my words.”

The Dean nodded to her and she stepped away. Every student of Primrose College stood as she walked and applauded her. Penelope blushed and smiled. She walked down the center aisle and exited the building.

I have gone a long time without making real friends at Primrose, but today I see two worth making.

When Friends Are Foes

May 15, 1896
Sarah Waters

It has been more than a week now since I was captured. I lost track of sunrises, counted from glistening light peeking through the cracks separating the wooden boards which comprise the walls of my prison. The mornings and nights are cold, the days are long and fruitless. My hopes for rescue have dwindled from a certainty to a prayer for a miracle.

Laura no longer apologizes for bringing us here, in fact, she no longer speaks to me at all. The silence is preferable to her helpless moaning and self-pitying whining of our earliest hours of confinement. I would be angry with her but there is no point.

In the days since our capture, we have been joined by others. Most are wives of other miners but some are daughters like us. They arrive in groups of two most times with sacks covering their heads. They spend hours crying until our guards grow tired of it and threaten to “give them something to cry about.”

I have tried to help calm the newcomers and offer solace for those around me but most blame my father for our being here. Naturally as my father’s daughter I deserve the blame as well. I welcome it if it will make them feel better.

I am baffled by the lack of resistance among us. Most are convinced it will only be a short time before the miners cave in and go back to work. They think we will be free to go home then and that everything will be back as it should be. Have they all such short memories?

It was not so long ago we all stood together, prayed together for the safety of men trapped in the mine. We shared heartache and tears and in the end for most their worst fears were averted. But not for everyone. I still recall the look on my father’s face as he carried the body of Uncle Mike.

Perhaps the rest can forget how this all began, but I cannot.
I have spent my time plotting escape again as I did in jail. I had reason to hold out hope while father and I rested behind the iron bars of our cells, but here in this wooden cage hope of rescue is a fool’s nugget.

The biggest obstacle toward escape is not knowing where we are. I can hear the horses from time to time so I am fairly certain I could find Jasper and mount him without being noticed, but there is no way I could ride him out without someone seeing or hearing. The matter of knowing which way to run could be the difference between getting away and getting caught.

The guards are lazy. They do not pay close attention to us but no one has given them cause to either. They have a rotating shift with always three men on. They often spend their shifts drinking and playing cards, leaving the three sides of the barn unattended.

The wood around the barn is rotted in a couple of places, most noticeable on the back corner where water seems to settle. A few good kicks and the wood would almost certainly give way. Conveniently, a hay stack hides the spot from view unless one is looking directly along the back line of the barn.

The other problem I notice is that I am probably the most high profile prisoner. Meaning, my movements are more monitored than the others. And of course, there is the other problem, many of these women are more likely to alert the guards to any escape attempt I make than they are to smile at me. No doubt they consider it helping to keep me from making matters worse and I have no illusions of being able to convince them otherwise.

Therefore in order to mount an effective escape I will have to not only see to it the guards are occupied but also my fellow captives. The surroundings being primarily, hay, wood, and dirt, leaves little options for a decent distraction. In fact only one comes to mind, fire, and I am hesitant to use it.

I kicked at the dirt in frustration. Several of the women stared at me, including Laura. Looking around at them it suddenly came to me. They were quite likely a better distraction than anything I could manufacture.

To make things work I will need help. Of course my help will not need to know they are helping. I almost smiled but thought better of it. I walked to where Laura sat on the dirt floor, depressed and bored.

“We should talk.” I said, sitting down beside her.

“I’ve apologized as many times as I’m going to.” She replied, not looking at me.

“I don’t need apologies. I need help.”

“Help for what?” She looked up.

“Help for getting us all out of here.”

“That’s impossible. You’ll get us hurt or worse, killed.”

“Will you at least hear me out? If you don’t like what I say, I’ll forget it.” I pleaded with her.

“Fine, but promise me you’ll drop it if I say it’s bad.”

“I promise.”

“Then I’ll listen, but don’t expect much.”

I proceeded to outline an escape plan for Laura to get to a horse and ride off into town to let our fathers know where we were being held.

Laura’s eyes brightened as she realized I was placing my trust once again in her.

“What if I can’t tell for certain where we are at?” She asked.

“Our fathers will be able to figure it out without too much trouble with what you do know.” I replied confidently.

“Why me?” She asked.

“Because they are watching me too closely. You could slip away and be gone and they might not notice for hours or longer.”

She nodded.

“Are you sure you can distract them long enough for me to get away?”
“Yes.” I replied.

“I’ll do it.” She said.

It took an hour to prepare things. Laura quietly peeled the boards away behind the haystack without being noticed and I kept myself in plain sight toward the front doors.

When all was ready I pounded on the door with my fist.

“I want to talk to Billy!” I shouted.

“Shut up.” Came the response from one of the guards.

Laura slipped out the hole she had created.

“Get Billy Buster this instant!” I yelled.

“Shut up or we’ll come in there and make you wish you had!”

“If Billy finds out you didn’t let him know I wanted to talk he’ll make you regret it!”

The door swung open. Three large men loomed over me looking like they were ready to kill something. I had an inkling the something was me but I was about to change everything.

I could see Laura slipping into the corral with the horses behind them. She was almost certain to get away if I kept their attention for a few minutes longer. Too bad for Laura my plans were a bit different.

“Look,” I pointed behind them. “She’s going to get away!”

Only one of them turned to look but it was enough.

“Come on, she’s not lying!” He hollered as he took off running for Laura.

“Stop!” He shouted at Laura.

Laura’s face turned white and she leapt over the corral fence and started running across an open field toward forest.

The two men remaining near me turned to follow, with one slamming the door closed in my face and locking it.

Quickly, I ran to the back of the barn and slipped through the hole in the wall. Several women shouted after me but with the guards occupied with Laura I was far from worried.

I jumped the corral fence and ran straight for Jasper. He saw me coming and moved close to the fence. He was not saddled but he knew I intended to mount him from the look in his eye.

I stepped up on the fence and used it like a ladder to get up on his back. My arms wrapped around his neck and he took off at a full gallop for the far side of the corral.

He jumped the fence in stride and kept running straight for the tree line.

Out in the open I could tell we were north of town and Jasper seemed to know it as well. He ran toward home like the wind and it was all I could do to stay balanced on him without a saddle.

In the distance behind me I could hear Billy Busters voice bellowing at his men.

“You fools! You let her get away!”

I allowed myself a smile.

Jasper continued to run full speed but my grip was slipping. I knew from the start we would have a difficult run to get away but I had not counted on how hard it would be to remain on Jasper without a saddle.

Swishing through the trees, my grip around his neck began to loosen. I struggled to push myself forward but without stirrups it was impossible. My fingers slipped.

A stray branch caught my arm and I fell. Jasper kept running for a moment before realizing he had lost me.

I picked myself up off the ground intending to attempt to remount Jasper. Closing in fast I heard the hoof beats of more than a dozen horses and before I could even take a step toward Jasper, we were surrounded.

Billy dismounted and stood face to face with me.

“I’ve known men who’d have given up long before now, Miss Waters. You impress me.” He said.

“I’ve known women with more smarts than you, Billy and you’ve yet to come close to impressing me.” I replied.

“I’ll have to do something about that then.” He replied before swinging his closed fist to my face.

It looked to be about noon by the sun in the sky, but as I hit the ground, it was sunset.

I awoke in darkness. Immediately I realized I was stripped from the waist up. My hands were stretched above me so my toes barely touched the ground. A wooden post stretched from floor to ceiling in front of me. By the light of dim lanterns I recognized the barn of my captivity.

A whip lashed across my back. At first it was like a tickle but as the seconds ticked by it began to itch and then it began to burn. My eyes began to water.

The whip lashed out again, this time it burned from the first moment. I cried out in pain.

There was silence around me but I could feel the eyes of every soul in the room.

Again and again I was whipped until my leg gave up any pretense of support. I hung like dead weight on the ropes binding my hands. Tears graced my cheeks but I refused to beg for mercy.

A rough hand gripped my hair and pulled my downtrodden head upward. I looked into the eyes of the devil himself and was not afraid. Billy Busters grinned.

“I promised you would find yourself here if you gave me any more trouble, didn’t I?” He asked.

I stared at him as if my hatred alone would smite him from existence.

“Answer me!” He yanked on my hair until if felt as though he would rip my scalp clean off.

“Yes.” I whispered in a hoarse voice.

“I always keep my promises, remember that, Miss Waters.”

He turned my head to the side.

“Look now and see what happens to anyone who helps Miss Waters.” He said to the room at large.

In front of my eyes, knelt Laura. She sobbed uncontrollably at a man’s feet. He held a red hot branding iron in his hands. Slowly, he brought it down toward her face with an evil laugh.

Laura screamed in terror. Laura screamed in pain. I closed my eyes.

Friends In Need

May 14, 1896
Edith Bowen

“Miss Bowen, may I have a word?” Mr. Carrington asked as I stood from the dinner table.

“Yes, of course.” I replied, although were it not impolite, I might have refused.

We walked in silence to his study. As he closed the door behind me I recalled my last private visit inside the room. More accurately I recalled being spanked for my vocal opinions.

“I am aware you no longer feel any loyalty toward myself or my wife. We are disappointed, but your loyalties are your own.” Mr. Carrington paused as though searching for the words to express himself.

“You are correct. We stand as if on opposite shores and the bridge once strong between us now crumbles from a weakened foundation.”

“An apt analogy. Perhaps in time the foundation can be repaired.”

“Time will see.”

“Irregardless, I am aware you are not letting matters lie.”

I remained silent not certain of his meaning and not wanting to give away anything which he did not all ready know.

He regarded me with an inquisitive eye. By the look of it he knew less than he purported to know. How typically masculine.

“You are meddling with a delicate balance. If not for yourself, then for your friends, let these matters go. No good will come of this.” Mr. Carrington sounded desperate.

“I will consider your request. If there is nothing else, I should retire.” I replied, heading for the door.

“Edith, please think beyond your own pride.”

“My own pride has never entered the equation. If you knew me as well you think, you would surely realize that simple truth.”

I opened the door and walked out before he could reply. The conversation would not improve, I am certain.

Upstairs in my room I found a note on my pillow.

    Edith,
Meet me at Primrose Hall. Matters have changed, we must discuss.
      E.B.

By the late hour I knew I could not leave by the front door. Considering the strained relations in her room, I wondered how she planned to be out past curfew and not be caught.
I decided to check with Penelope before leaving.

“Elizabeth?” Penelope asked.

“Yes, where is she?”

“How should I know? I have not seen her since dinner.”

A giggle came from behind me. Lucy stood in the doorway.

“What are you looking so happy about?” Penelope asked her.

“None of your concern.” Lucy replied and it seemed she could barely contain herself from sticking her tongue out at Penelope.

A sinking feeling hit the pit of my stomach. The note had hardly sounded like Elizabeth and Lucy’s too good of mood with her fate still uncertain seemed murkily connected.

“Where is Elizabeth?” I asked her.

“Where do you think she is?” Lucy answered but her eyes betrayed her as the glanced too knowingly at the folded note in my hand.

“Lucy Meyer, what have you done?” I tried to keep my voice calm.

Lucy giggled.

“I’ll never tell.” She smiled.

I would like to have wrapped my fingers around her neck at that moment. I dreamt of slapping the evil smile from her lips and beating the truth out of her, but at last it was not in me to do such.

I returned to my room and sat on my bed. I looked at the note in my hands and read it over. I suppose I hoped the words would somehow reveal a deeper story if I only read them in the right light.

Everyone around me fell asleep. Carrington Manor fell silent as night settled in. I crept from my room to the hall and stood before the window at its end.

My hands went to work unlocking it and sliding it open. Undoubtedly, a trap lay ahead but Elizabeth was trapped in it all ready and I could not shake the responsibility for it from my shoulders.

A noise behind me made me jump.

“Don’t.” Penelope whispered.

I turned, startled, to face her.

“What are you doing here?”

“Helping.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“Because Elizabeth is a friend.”

I regarded her suspiciously for a moment in the dimly lit hallway.

“What do you propose?”

“Lucy knows something.” She replied.

“Of this I have no doubt.”

“She will require more persuasive measure to talk than I am capable of without attracting attention.”

“So, again I ask, what do you propose?” I said with impatience creeping into my tone.

“The one thing no one expects, Edith. Let’s wake Mister and Misses Carrington.”

“Have you lost all sense?”

“No, think about it. Lucy and her friends are clearly counting on you and I keeping quiet to protect Elizabeth, but if what we suspect is true then Elizabeth will not be protected by our silence at all. If we are wrong then the worst case is Elizabeth will suffer a little at the hands of Mrs. Carrington for staying out after curfew.”

I would never like to admit it to Penelope but her logic actually made a good deal of sense. The only question I still had remaining was how informing them would help matters.

“What can they do which we cannot?” I asked her.

“Make Lucy talk.” She replied.

I nodded as understanding finally dawned.

Knock. Knock.

There was no reply.

Knock. Knock.

Inside their room I could hear rustling. After nearly another full minute the door swung open to reveal a disheveled Mrs. Carrington.

She eyed Penelope and I with annoyance.

“What is going on girls?” She asked.

“Elizabeth is missing.” Penelope spoke before I could choose my words.

“What do you mean missing?” Mr. Carrington’s voice called from the darkness.

“As in not where she belongs, missing.” I replied.

“You might want to start at the beginning girls.” Mrs. Carrington said.

Her eyes scanned over us as if pointing out our less than appropriate attire for bed.
Penelope and I explained the evenings event starting with the note I found after leaving Mr. Carrington and then our encounter with a gleeful Lucy.

They listened carefully. They studied the note. They closed their door to confer privately for a moment.

Penelope and I waited nervously.

The door flew open and Mr. Carrington exited fully dressed.

“Girls you will accompany me to Primrose Hall. We shall see if she is indeed there waiting for you.” He ordered.

I nodded.

“I will have a chat with Lucy in the meantime.” Mrs. Carrington informed us.

The journey to Primrose Hall was quick but seemed to last twice as long as normal. When the carriage rolled to a stop at last, Mr. Carrington stuck his inside for a moment.

“Stay here.” He said with a somber look on his face.

He closed the door and I could hear his footsteps click on the concrete. I peeked out the window into the darkness and gasped.

A street lamp illuminated the step of Primrose Hall. In the dim light it was easy to see her, Elizabeth. She lay face down on the steps and her face was hidden never the less I knew it to be her.

She was stripped naked, her arms and legs bound to the side railings of the steps. Her body stretched across them like an “X”. Her skin was red and welted. No doubt she had been thoroughly whipped while bound.

A tear slipped from my eye. I opened the door and exited the carriage and ran to her. Mr. Carrington clearly did not approve but he remained quiet. He cut the ropes binding her one by one.

“Elizabeth.” I said gently.

She did not respond. Her ties cut, I carefully rolled her over. Her eyes were open but they did not see me.

“I tried to warn you.” Mr. Carrington said.

I hugged her to me. Tears of anger burned my cheeks. I glared at Mr. Carrington but bit my tongue from lashing out at his unhelpful words.

Penelope joined me and together we carried Elizabeth’s limp body to the carriage.

Back at Carrington Manor, we carried her inside. She was starting to come around and moaned in obvious pain.

“Run her a warm bath and set her in the tub. I’ll be up in a minute.” Mrs. Carrington instructed.
Lucy stood behind her in her nightclothes. She looked smug and had it not been for Elizabeth in my arms I would have polished the floor with her face.

Mr. Carrington was not immune though. He crossed the room between them in hardly a second. His large hand swung through the air and his open palm caught her face and sent her flying into the wall with a resounding slap.

“Tell me what you know.” He thundered.

Lucy giggled.

He grabbed her by the hair and ripped her nightclothes from her body.

Lucy screamed.

He threw her to the floor.

“You can talk now or you can talk later. Either way you will talk, the only question is how much pain you will endure first.” He said.

She rose to her knees, the smug look finally faded from her face and replaced by fear.
He slapped her face again and she fell back to the floor with a cry.

I would have liked to have stayed and watched the rest but Elizabeth required my attention more.

My Friend, The Paddle

May 13, 1896
Penelope Sumter

Her naked buttocks clenched and unclenched in the open air. The paddle felt light in my hands as I stood to her left and aimed my swing. Every other time I have held the paddle in my hands it has been a burden as heavy as lead, but not so today.

I raised it high in the air and swung. The paddle struck flat at the fleshiest part of her white bottom. It was fascinating to watch the skin flush pink before my eyes as I lifted the paddle away.

“No, no, no, Penelope.” Mr. Phallic said, “Strike a little lower and flick your wrist just before it touches.”

“Yes, sir. Sorry, sir.” I replied.

Lucy moaned what might have been a protest. It was my third swat and Dr. Phallic had insisted until I get it just right none would count. Lucy’s reddening cheeks undoubtedly had a different count going but Dr. Phallic’s was the only one that mattered.

I swung again, this time flick my wrist just before impacting her cheeks on the lower half. Lucy’s hands shot up past her knees a touch, before settling back down to her toes where they belonged.
“Much better. This next swat will be number one.” Dr. Phallic announced to the class more than to Lucy or I.

I took gleeful aim and swung again. I struck the same spot as before and flicked my wrist just right. The thunderous impact surprised me. Her fleshy cheeks wobbled briefly and Lucy cried out in discomfort.

I struggled to keep a stern look upon my face.

“It was Sir Isaac Newton who first theorized, every action will have an equal and opposite reaction.” Dr. Phallic explained to the class.

I swung again. Lucy cried out and I could see tears spring from her eyes from my view between her legs.

“Miss Meyer’s very position is a testament to the veracity of this law of nature. Witness how her attempts to embarrass and humiliate a fellow student left her embarrassed and humiliated by a fellow student.” Dr. Phallic lectured.

I swung again, a little harder this time. Lucy’s buttocks wobbled and screamed out. Her hands nearly reached up to grab her swelling bottom before control returned and she touched her toes yet again.

“Further note how her wide bottom bulges under the impact of the paddle.”

I could almost feel the humiliated burning of her blushing cheeks. The ones on her face that is. The other cheeks were beginning to glow with their heat.

I swung again.

“Please no more. I am sorry. Please.” Lucy begged between tears.

I suspect Dr. Phallic’s class lesson was as effective as the swats themselves. How humbling it must be to not only find ones self bent and naked before a full classroom but then to be an object lesson for the class as well. Were I not quite so cold hearted I might have felt sorry for her.
Instead I raised the paddle again and brought it down even lower. Lucy squealed.

I raised the paddle yet again.

“Newton also pointed out another seemingly obvious piece of logic and nature. What goes up,” Dr. Phallic said as I swung the paddle downward, “must go down.”

Crack!

“Ooh! Please, no more!” Lucy begged.

I gave not a pause before bringing the paddle to meet her flesh again. Lucy shook her feet and struggled to keep her hands out of the way.

I swung again a little too low. It was an accident I swear. Lucy shot upright and grabbed her burning butt and thighs while jumping around in a circle.

Dr. Phallic seized the moment and said, “Note how even her tiny breasts move in opposition of her bounce affirming equal and opposite and also how they go up and come down affirming what goes up must come down.”

The class laughed. Lucy cried.

“Miss Meyer you still have one swat to come unless you prefer to start over you will stop your embarrassing display and offer your butt for the rest of the punishment you deserve.” Dr. Phallic’s voice was almost cruel.

Lucy stopped jumping but could not stop her trembling or her sobs. She found the strength inside her to bend back over though.

I raised the paddle high. I swung low. Lucy leapt into the air on impact. I imagine her cry was heard as far away as Carrington Manor. At last I felt satisfied.

Dr. Phallic pulled out the stool to the front of the class.

“Have a seat, Miss Meyer.” He said.

She clearly wished to do anything but sit. Her wishes were not being granted though and sit she did.

I could not have planned better revenge on Lucy. There is something sweeter about the fact she has dropped herself in it all without so much as a nudge from me. In fact it appears her actions have brought into question whether Jenny may have been a victim of Lucy as well. I laugh at the irony.

It was Dr. Phallic’s suggestion for me to administer ten swats personally. The Dean felt this was only fair considering I had unfairly suffered from Lucy’s actions. They will receive no objections from me on the matter.

What Lucy will receive beyond that is still pending. Due to the nature of her crime and the malicious intentions behind it, there is talk of formal charges being levied. The decision will be made at the school board meeting later this week. I will be given an opportunity to speak my thoughts before they decide.

Mr. Carrington is feeling quite guilty for having assumed I had something to do with Jennifer Abbott’s expulsion. The fact a third party informed on Lucy, I still do not know who, has completely eliminated me as a suspect in any of these affairs. It is a shame I cannot celebrate my success with anyone.
